Why the technology/extracurricular fee is needed:
1) Our technology infrastructure: With a fast-growing campus, we have increased band-width capacity for all students as well as put in fiber optic cables and will continue to add as needed in order to meet the campus technology needs as enrollment increases. This is crucial for the modern, innovative way that we deliver instruction and will ensure that ALL students have adequate and reliable internet access for their coursework.
2) Hardware & software: Gateway is literally on the cutting edge in our use of instructional technology. Through our Moodle, Pearson Virtual, SuccessMaker, NovaNET and our electronic library resources, students are being provided with quality learning opportunities from kindergarten through their senior year. The number of courses and types of skill support that we can provide has increased exponentially. Providing access to quality hardware is also essential to our instruction.
3) Transportation: The number of academic field trips and special events that require transportation has increased dramatically since our opening and will likely continue to increase. We currently have two full-size school buses and two smaller vehicles that are available for ALL staff members to utilize for their classes, teams and programs. This fee helps to defray these rising costs.
4) Competition Fees: Students have the opportunity to participate in athletic events, fine arts events and academic events. All of these have many costs, including facility usage fees, officiating fees, registration and entry fees and others. We are committed to growing our athletic and fine arts programs, and are already quiet competitive in many of them.
What the technology/extra-curricular fees DO NOT cover.
1) PE uniforms
2) Lunches
3) School Supplies
4) Ownership of a computer or tablet service
5) Admission fees related to field trips
6) Elementary after-school club fees (including academic supervision)
7) Costumes and certain equipment for dance, cheer and other activities
8) Items specific to classrooms at the elementary level (such as items for parties, special events, etc.)
9) Testing fees (AP, PSAT, SAT, etc.)
Voluntary Donations:
As a public charter school Gateway receives $2,009 less per student in funding than local public school districts (Click here for Charter School Funding Study). Charter schools are not allowed to tap into the local tax base to generate tax revenue to build facilities. To make up for this funding deficit Gateway requests that each student family voluntarily participates in our Annual Fund Drive by becoming a Gator Club Member. The Gator Club Annual Fund Drive is how we raise the money to cover the annual costs of our temporary building leases and, in the future, our new permanent buildings. This also allows us to keep our class size small, recruit and retain talented faculty, and offer more extracurricular activities.
